Summary

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer revolves around the youthful adventures of the novel's schoolboy protagonist, Thomas Sawyer, whose reputation precedes him for causing mischief and strife。 Tom lives with his Aunt Polly, half-brother Sid, and cousin Mary in the quaint town of St。 Petersburg, just off the shore of the Mississippi River。 St。 Petersburg is described as a typical small-town atmosphere where the Christian faith is predominant, the social network is close-knit, and familiarity resides。

Unlike his brother Sid, Tom receives "lickings" from his Aunt Polly; ever the mischief-maker, would rather play hooky than attend school and often sneaks out his bedroom window at night to adventure with his friend, Huckleberry Finn the town's social outcast。 Tom, despite his dread of schooling, is extremely clever and would normally get away with his pranks if Sid were not such a "tattle-tale。"

As punishment for skipping school to go swimming, Aunt Polly assigns Tom the chore of whitewashing the fence surrounding the house。 In a brilliant scheme, Tom is able to con the neighborhood boys into completing the chore for him, managing to convince them of the joys of whitewashing。 At school, Tom is equally as flamboyant, and attracts attention by chasing other boys, yelling, and running around。 With his usual antics, Tom attempts to catch the eye of Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town, and persuades her to get "engaged" by kissing him。 But their romance collapses when she learns Tom has been "engaged" previously to Amy Lawrence。 Shortly after Becky shuns him, he accompanies Huckleberry Finn to the graveyard at night, where they witness the murder of Dr。 Robinson。

"What's gone with that boy,  I wonder? You TOM!"

The old lady pulled her spectacles down and looked over them about the room; then she put them up and looked out under them。 She seldom or never looked through them for so small a thing as a boy; they were her state pair, the pride of her heart, and were built for "style," not service—she could have seen through a pair of stove-lids just as well。 She looked perplexed for a moment, and then said, not fiercely, but still loud enough for the furniture to hear:
"Well, I lay if I get hold of you I'll—"
She did not finish, for by this time she was bending down and punching under the bed with the broom, and so she needed breath to punctuate the punches with。 She resurrected nothing but the cat。
"I never did see the beat of that boy!"

This was one of my favorite stories as a kid and I found that I still love it just as much as an adult。 Tom is such a rascal and he puts his poor Aunt Polly through a lot of trouble and worry, but he also has a big heart and never deliberately causes trouble。 He’s just incredibly short-sighted and rarely thinks past the present moment, which is probably not too unusual for a boy his age。 This book takes place in 1840s Missouri, so there are no TVs or technology of any kind。 Entertainment was fou This was one of my favorite stories as a kid and I found that I still love it just as much as an adult。 Tom is such a rascal and he puts his poor Aunt Polly through a lot of trouble and worry, but he also has a big heart and never deliberately causes trouble。 He’s just incredibly short-sighted and rarely thinks past the present moment, which is probably not too unusual for a boy his age。 This book takes place in 1840s Missouri, so there are no TVs or technology of any kind。 Entertainment was found entirely in outdoor adventures。 This book will take you through adventures like treasure hunting, rafting on the river, exploring caves, witnessing a murder, etc。 For me it was a lot of fun and I love Twain’s storytelling。 The elephant in the room with Mark Twain books is that Twain himself is controversial。 He uses some racist language in his books (including this one), which although normal for the time and place the book was written, is certainly and thankfully not appropriate today。 Twain is often described as a man of his time who ridiculed everyone and every social construct through his writing - meaning that he didn’t target any specific group of people but considered everyone fair game for satire。 But that doesn’t mean that specific groups of people have not been offended or hurt by his writing and opinions。 Readers have differing views on separating a book from an author, so if you haven’t read Twain before, I’d suggest doing your own research first。 As nostalgic as this book is for me and as much as I love the storytelling and adventures of Tom Sawyer, this isn’t a book I would personally recommend to kids even though it is considered children’s literature。 。。。more

I know that this is a classic, but I just couldn't even finish it。 This book was published in 1876, and for me ( who's English isn't the first language) the writing style is so different and sometimes not understandable。 The story is about a 12/13 year old boy - Tom, his friends and there life's。 Its a good book if you like to just disappear from the big world and remember childhood and how easy and fun it was。 But for me it was just boring and it wasn't enjoyable。 It was like a kids book。 Ther I know that this is a classic, but I just couldn't even finish it。 This book was published in 1876, and for me ( who's English isn't the first language) the writing style is so different and sometimes not understandable。 The story is about a 12/13 year old boy - Tom, his friends and there life's。 Its a good book if you like to just disappear from the big world and remember childhood and how easy and fun it was。 But for me it was just boring and it wasn't enjoyable。 It was like a kids book。 There are only 221 page's and I could even read 74 when I stopped。 I was really and I mean REALLY hoping that I will love this book, becouse the description was really interesting。 But in the end it was a disaster。 Maybe some day I will read it fully, and maybe my thoughts will change, but for now they aren't very good。E❤ 。。。more

If I were rating only the edition, I would definitely give it a lower grade。 It seems to be a British edition, going by what's on the copyright page, but in addition to the odd British spellings, and the weird way that the Brits use "inverted commas" (of course they probably think our way of using quotations marks is strange), there are some typographical errors as well。 This is, I suspect, the result of the apparent modern custom of "editing" consisting mainly of running the spell checker over If I were rating only the edition, I would definitely give it a lower grade。 It seems to be a British edition, going by what's on the copyright page, but in addition to the odd British spellings, and the weird way that the Brits use "inverted commas" (of course they probably think our way of using quotations marks is strange), there are some typographical errors as well。 This is, I suspect, the result of the apparent modern custom of "editing" consisting mainly of running the spell checker over the text; here, as in any number of other books I've come across, the words have the correct spelling, but they're the wrong words。The story, however, is excellent。 Twain wasn't exactly consistent in his depictions - sometimes Tom seems to be a young boy (he loses a tooth) and other times an adolescent (he falls in love with Becky Thatcher), and in a note at the end Tom is soon to be a man。 St。 Petersburg, Tom's fictional hometown, is a "village," yet it's large enough to have an abandoned slaughterhouse, and an iron foundry, and the mansion of the Widow Douglas outside of town。 For younger readers these things will of course pass right by, as I can testify - I've been reading the book for decades。 But for those of us who are, er, less young than we used to be, they might jar a little。But this is one of the most entertaining books I've ever encountered。 Never mind that Twain couldn't decide how old Tom is, or whether the dialect ought to sound southern or midwestern (he grew up in Missouri, along the Mississippi River, but I'm not certain accurately remembers, or accurately reproduces, the dialect of the time and place - it's also inconsistent)。 Never mind that no one suspects Injun Joe of killing Dr。 Robinson, but after Joe's death the town suspects him of five murders。 Never mind all this。 Tom Sawyer is a masterpiece of storytelling, and so in spite of Twain's inconsistencies, and the bizarre edition, I gave it five stars without a qualm。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 As far as classics go, I enjoyed this and it’s relatively easy to understand as far as linguistics go。I couldn’t help but be shocked through the entire book that Aunt Polly was either oblivious or that she let Tom get away with almost everything。 Like that kid would’ve had his hide tanned so quick in today’s day and age。At first it was hard to see an overarching story line and it felt like Twain was just jumping from one escapade to the next。 Then they all interested。The ending I thought really As far as classics go, I enjoyed this and it’s relatively easy to understand as far as linguistics go。I couldn’t help but be shocked through the entire book that Aunt Polly was either oblivious or that she let Tom get away with almost everything。 Like that kid would’ve had his hide tanned so quick in today’s day and age。At first it was hard to see an overarching story line and it felt like Twain was just jumping from one escapade to the next。 Then they all interested。The ending I thought really showed Tom as he truly was, a rascal with a good heart。 Poor Huck can’t stand being in polite society but Tom convinced him it’s worth it without Huck seeing what he’s doing。 。。。more

Pertama kali baca buku Mark Twain, agak kaget dengan American English。 Sempat DNF tapi akhirnya lanjut dengan bantuan audiobook。 Wkwk。Cerita Tom Sawyer ini cukup terkenal karena menggambarkan kenakalan anak laki-laki yang kemudian mengalami hal-hal menarik sehingga akhirnya menjadi anak baik-baik。Bukan bacaan fun read karena banyak scene yang bikin ngilu。

Revisiting childhood favorites can be a dangerous thing。 I was happy to reread this, though it is much darker than I remembered。 Having first read this in high school, and I can't quite recall if we discussed the racism in the book in depth。 We must have touched on it, but did we ever put any sort of reasoned and insightful context to it beyond "here's a popular derogatory word of the age the book was written and we don't say it now。" I'm fairly certain we didn't analyze the stereotypes of the d Revisiting childhood favorites can be a dangerous thing。 I was happy to reread this, though it is much darker than I remembered。 Having first read this in high school, and I can't quite recall if we discussed the racism in the book in depth。 We must have touched on it, but did we ever put any sort of reasoned and insightful context to it beyond "here's a popular derogatory word of the age the book was written and we don't say it now。" I'm fairly certain we didn't analyze the stereotypes of the day。 In my re-read, I'm not exactly sure as to what Twain is satirizing。 Religion, for sure, but racism, misogyny and sexism? Unclear, and that is what is most disappointing。 This is a children's story, certainly, but adults can read it between the lines。 I don't ever remember reading the first time around about Joe's revenge against a woman: the best revenge was to disfigure her and he goes into graphic detail。 Dark for a child, indeed。 Uncomfortable reading for anyone。 The intriguing thing about this book is that it was written after the Civil War and recalls the period when the generation of boys, Tom and Huck and their friends, would have grown up to likely be soldiers in the Civil War。 I'm stymied what to make of this, but I don't think it was an accident that Twain set the story during this particular period。 I remember being fascinated by small midwestern towns because of this book。 White picket fences, busybodies, sipping lemonade on a porch。。。 this book definitely made an impression on me during my adolescence。 Reading it well into adulthood I'm able to now ponder and scrutinize the grittier and more troublesome aspects of the story and not romanticize this book at all。 You could set a drinking game to amount of times Twain says "Presently" and "by the by," but for the most part, this book does use advanced language that doesn't talk down to kids。 Twain expertly captures the nuances of language between children。 Tom and Becky, Tom and Huck - these conversations felt very rooted in childhood and the scope of a child's world, though in some ways Huck appeared as much older than I ever remembered him being。 。。。more

Tom Sawyer was really fun and enjoyable to read since it is all about a kid's adventures with his best friends。 This book brought back lots of memories of my own little adventures that I have had throughout my life with my family and friends。 Tom was never anything but a playful and ambitious boy that would get into all kinds of trouble。 One thing that I really liked about Tom was that he was always strong and brave for his friends even when he felt all was lost for them。 Another thing about Tom Tom Sawyer was really fun and enjoyable to read since it is all about a kid's adventures with his best friends。 This book brought back lots of memories of my own little adventures that I have had throughout my life with my family and friends。 Tom was never anything but a playful and ambitious boy that would get into all kinds of trouble。 One thing that I really liked about Tom was that he was always strong and brave for his friends even when he felt all was lost for them。 Another thing about Tom was that he would get into a lot of trouble, but he usually didn’t mean to scare or worry his family or friends。 I also liked that Tom was never afraid to hang out with Huckleberry Finn, even when most of the town hated and talked badly about Huckleberry。 Once in a while Tom makes the mistake of acting before he has a chance to think of what the consequences might be for him, his family or friends。 This isn’t normally a book I would read and at some points in this book I would lose interest in the story, but in the end I’m glad this is one of the stories I have chosen to read this summer。 Mark Twain did a really good job of showing how Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn saw things and their opinions on life。 It was fascinating to watch them take on some of the craziest and coolest adventures of their lives。 Tom Sawyer is a really good book to read if you're looking for something to brighten your day or if you’re just looking for something nice and quick to read。 I really enjoyed all of Tom’s little and big adventures。 I would recommend this book to my family and friends as it isn’t too long and is just full of adventure。 。。。more

This was a great fun and easy read。 Written in episodes, the adventures were sometimes hilarious and sometimes scary and annoying。 I mostly liked the character of Tom Sawyer。 He's clever and intelligent but his naive worldview and overactive imagination often gets the best of him。 I wonder what crazy antics he would jump headfirst into if he hadn't had his aunt Polly and his friends to keep him in line。 This was a great fun and easy read。 Written in episodes, the adventures were sometimes hilarious and sometimes scary and annoying。 I mostly liked the character of Tom Sawyer。 He's clever and intelligent but his naive worldview and overactive imagination often gets the best of him。 I wonder what crazy antics he would jump headfirst into if he hadn't had his aunt Polly and his friends to keep him in line。 。。。more

From what I knew of Tom from reading 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn', I thought I would heavily dislike this book, but it wasn't so。 I liked the children's dialogues, reading about their inventive games and recognising my younger self in Tom's dramatic mental switches to 'Nobody understands me, nobody cares! This life is not worth living, I have to get away!' etc。 The characters were realistic enough, some episodes made me chuckle aloud in public, and the plot was also quite captivating。 A From what I knew of Tom from reading 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn', I thought I would heavily dislike this book, but it wasn't so。 I liked the children's dialogues, reading about their inventive games and recognising my younger self in Tom's dramatic mental switches to 'Nobody understands me, nobody cares!
